Shikakai vs Shampoo: Why Your Hair Might Be Better Off Going Back to Basics

Walk into any supermarket and you will find an entire aisle dedicated to shampoos promising everything from hair fall control to salon-smooth results. And yet, a growing number of people in India are quietly going back to something their great-grandparents used: Shikakai powder.

Is this just nostalgia, or is there something genuinely beneficial about washing hair with Shikakai? This article breaks it down.

What Is Shikakai?

Shikakai, or Acacia Concinna, is a climbing shrub native to Asia, found widely across India. Its pods and bark have been used for thousands of years as a natural hair cleanser. The word itself means "fruit for hair" in Hindi, which tells you exactly why people have valued it.

Its cleaning ability comes from naturally occurring saponins, plant compounds that lather mildly in water and remove dirt and grease without stripping the scalp's natural oils.

What Most Shampoos Do to Your Scalp

Most commercial shampoos, even those marketed as "mild" or "gentle," contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate (SLES). These detergents create a rich lather and effectively remove oil, but they often remove too much. Over time, this over-stripping causes the scalp to overcompensate by producing more oil, which leads to the cycle of greasy hair returning faster and faster after every wash.

People with dry scalp, dandruff, or chemically treated hair are particularly affected. This is where Shikakai offers a fundamentally different approach.

Key Benefits of Shikakai for Hair

Cleans Without Stripping

Because saponins are much gentler than synthetic sulphates, Shikakai removes dirt and excess oil without disrupting the scalp's natural oil balance. Hair washed with Shikakai tends to feel clean but not squeaky dry.

Strengthens Hair from the Root

Shikakai is rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. Regular use nourishes the hair shaft and strengthens the roots, which over time reduces hair breakage and thinning.

Reduces Dandruff Naturally

The antifungal and antimicrobial properties of Shikakai make it effective against the Malassezia fungus that causes dandruff. It also soothes scalp irritation and reduces flakiness without the harsh chemicals found in medicated shampoos.

Promotes Hair Growth

A healthy, clean scalp is the foundation of healthy hair growth. By keeping follicles clear of buildup and nourishing the scalp with vitamins, Shikakai creates an environment where hair can grow without obstruction.

Adds Natural Shine

Unlike silicone-based shampoos that coat the hair shaft for an artificial shine, Shikakai produces a natural lustre. The hair looks healthy rather than plastic.

How to Use Ujjwala Shikakai Powder Hair Pack

Method 1 (Paste): Soak two to three tablespoons of Ujjwala Shikakai Powder in water or Ujjwala Rose Water for 30 minutes. Apply on wet scalp and hair like a natural shampoo. Massage gently for three to five minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Method 2 (Quick use): Mix the powder directly with water to form a paste of medium consistency. Apply to scalp and hair, leave for five minutes, then rinse.

Frequency: Two to three times a week as a shampoo replacement. Or once a week as a hair pack alongside your regular shampoo routine.

Shikakai + Amla + Satreetha: The Classic Trio

For stronger results, Ujjwala recommends combining Shikakai with Amla and Satreetha (Reetha) powders. This combination is one of the oldest hair care recipes in Indian tradition.

  • Shikakai cleanses and strengthens

  • Amla adds Vitamin C and stimulates hair growth

  • Satreetha creates natural lather and deep-cleanses the scalp

All three are available individually from Ujjwala. Mix in equal parts, add water or rose water, and you have a complete traditional hair wash.

What to Expect During the Transition

If you are switching from commercial shampoo to Shikakai, your scalp may take two to four weeks to adjust. During this period, it is common to experience slightly more oiliness as the scalp recalibrates its oil production. This is normal and temporary. Most people notice cleaner, more balanced scalp health within a month of consistent use.

Who Should Use Shikakai?

Shikakai is suitable for all hair types but is especially beneficial for oily scalp, dandruff-prone hair, chemically treated or coloured hair, and hair that is experiencing thinning or breakage. It is gentle enough for children as well.
