Before there were brightening serums, before there was niacinamide, before the K-beauty wave reached India, there was Ubtan. This ancient paste of turmeric, gram flour, barley, and herbs was the original pre-bridal ritual, applied at weddings and festive occasions across India for generations.
Today, with the global skincare industry validating what Indian grandmothers already knew, Ubtan is seeing a well-deserved revival. But are you using it correctly? And what does the science behind it actually say?
What Is Ubtan?
Ubtan is a traditional Indian face and body paste made from a combination of plant-based powders, typically including turmeric, gram flour (besan), barley, sandalwood, and sometimes dried rose petals or saffron. The formulation has varied across regions and families for centuries.
The Ujjwala Ubtan Powder Face Pack contains turmeric, barley, gram flour, Multani Mitti, and sandalwood. This combination addresses brightening, exfoliation, oil control, and deep cleansing in a single product.
The Science Behind Ubtan's Ingredients
Turmeric and Curcumin
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been studied extensively for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research published in dermatology journals has found that curcumin inhibits melanin synthesis, which directly addresses hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. This is why regular Ubtan use has traditionally been associated with a brighter, more even complexion.
Gram Flour (Besan)
Gram flour is a gentle physical exfoliant. Its mildly coarse texture removes dead skin cells without the aggressive action of harsh scrubs. It also absorbs excess oil, making it effective for combination and oily skin types.
Barley
Barley contains beta-glucan, a compound known for its ability to soothe irritated skin and support the skin barrier. It also has mild brightening properties when applied topically.
Multani Mitti
The addition of Fuller's Earth in the Ujjwala Ubtan blend adds deep pore-cleansing and oil-absorbing benefits to the already brightening formula.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood has been used in Indian skincare for over 4,000 years. Its primary skin benefits include anti-inflammatory action, mild antiseptic properties, and a cooling effect that is particularly useful in Indian summers.

How to Use Ujjwala Ubtan Powder Face Pack
Step 1: Take one to two teaspoons of Ujjwala Ubtan Powder in a clean bowl.
Step 2: Mix with rose water, plain water, milk, or curd to form a smooth paste. For dry skin, use milk or curd. For oily skin, use rose water or plain water.
Step 3: Apply evenly on the face and neck. You can also apply to the arms and hands for a full-body brightening treatment.
Step 4: Leave for 15 to 20 minutes. The paste will dry partially. Do not let it crack completely on dry skin.
Step 5: Rinse with lukewarm water using gentle circular movements to get the exfoliation benefit.
Step 6: Pat dry and follow with a moisturiser.
Frequency: Two times a week for oily skin. Once a week for sensitive or dry skin.
Ubtan for Pre-Bridal and Festive Skin Prep
Ubtan remains one of the most trusted pre-bridal skin preparation rituals. For best results before a wedding, festival, or special occasion, begin using it four to six weeks in advance. The consistent exfoliation and brightening action will visibly even out skin tone and restore natural radiance.
This is also why Ubtan remains a popular choice across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where access to salon treatments is limited but the desire for glowing skin before events is just as strong.
A Note on Turmeric Staining
Turmeric can leave a temporary yellow tint on very fair skin. This fades within an hour. If this is a concern, rinse with a mixture of water and a few drops of lemon juice, or use a milk-based rinse. Avoid applying Ubtan to white or light-coloured clothing.
